Final Fantasy VII 1997 Sales Reach 15.5 Million Worldwide

Square’s original Final Fantasy VII has surpassed 15.5 million units sold worldwide, further cementing its position as one of the most commercially successful entries in the long-running role-playing franchise. First released in 1997, the title has steadily accumulated sales over nearly three decades through multiple re-releases and platform expansions.

The milestone follows a previous update in mid 2025, when the game crossed 15.1 million units. In less than a year, it added approximately 400,000 additional sales, reflecting sustained demand for the classic release. Of the total figure, around 10 million units were sold on the original PlayStation hardware alone.

Final Fantasy VII 1997 sales have been bolstered by extensive availability across platforms. In addition to its PlayStation 1 debut, the game has since launched on PC, iOS, Android, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. It is also featured as a legacy bonus on Switch 2. The continued reissue strategy has allowed new audiences to experience the title while longtime fans revisit it, sometimes more than once.

The broader Final Fantasy series has now surpassed 207 million units sold globally as of early 2026. Within that portfolio, the 1997 release remains the benchmark. Final Fantasy XV has exceeded 10.3 million units, Final Fantasy XVI stands at roughly 3.8 million, and the Final Fantasy VII Remake project has moved more than 7 million copies. Even so, the original release continues to lead as a standalone entry.

Final Fantasy VII follows Cloud Strife and the group AVALANCHE in their conflict against the Shinra Electric Power Company and Sephiroth. Its use of pre-rendered backgrounds, 3D character models, and cinematic storytelling marked a significant shift in the industry at the time.
