Naoki Hamaguchi, director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, has confirmed that the lighting improvements introduced in the PC version will be brought to the PlayStation 5 through a free update. The announcement was shared alongside details about an upcoming patch that aligns with the game’s expansion to additional platforms. According to Hamaguchi, the update is being prepared to coincide with the launch of the title on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox platforms.

Commenting on the update, Hamaguchi stated, “To coincide with the launch of FFVII REBIRTH on Switch 2 and Xbox, we’re preparing an update that adds Streamlined Progression features to the PS5 and PC versions. The PS5 version will also incorporate the lighting improvements previously added on PC.” He added that the development team’s broader objective remains consistency across platforms, saying, “Across the FFVII REMAKE series, our goal is to offer a consistent experience on every platform, and we’ll continue working to ensure players can enjoy the game comfortably wherever they choose to play.

The confirmation clarifies that PlayStation 5 players will not be left behind as visual enhancements continue to roll out. The lighting upgrade, which was previously exclusive to the PC version, will be integrated directly into the PS5 release. While details on the technical scope of the lighting improvements were not outlined, the intent is clearly positioned as a parity-focused update rather than a platform-specific enhancement.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is developed and published by Square Enix and serves as the second installment in the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy. Built using Unreal Engine 4, the action role-playing game continues the story of Cloud Strife and his companions as they leave Midgar and pursue Sephiroth across wider regions of the Planet. The game originally launched on PlayStation 5 on February 29, 2024, before arriving on PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store on January 23, 2025.
