Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is now running on Nintendo Switch 2, with Square Enix currently focused on optimizing performance and stabilizing frame rates. The update comes directly from series director Naoki Hamaguchi, who shared the status of development during a recent interview with GameSpot. His comments provide the clearest indication so far that the Switch 2 version is technically functional and progressing toward refinement.
According to Hamaguchi, the development team has already achieved a working build of Rebirth on Nintendo’s new hardware but is still addressing performance consistency. He stated, “While we have gotten [Rebirth] to function on the Switch 2, we still need to make sure that frame rates are stable. Our engineers are trying to fine tune that and make sure we’re optimizing properly.” The remarks suggest that optimization rather than fundamental compatibility is now the primary challenge for the platform.
These comments build on earlier assurances from Hamaguchi regarding the Nintendo Switch 2 versions of both Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and the third entry in the remake trilogy. In a prior interview conducted with Nintendo, he confirmed that neither title would be compromised to accommodate the hardware. Square Enix has since reiterated that both games are being developed for Switch 2 alongside other platforms, rather than as delayed or reduced ports.
Hamaguchi previously addressed concerns about gameplay parity across platforms by emphasizing a consistent development philosophy. He said, “I can reassure players that we’re working on the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second game in the series, and the third game too. They are being worked on for Nintendo Switch 2 alongside the other platforms right now.” This statement positioned the Switch 2 versions as part of the core development pipeline rather than secondary adaptations.
He further explained his stance on platform differences, stating, “I’ve got a personal policy where I don’t want to make any versions of my games different or offer a different gameplay experience just because they’re on different hardware.” Hamaguchi added that creating different experiences across platforms could confuse players when choosing which version to purchase, something he is intent on avoiding. As a result, he confirmed that “The Nintendo Switch 2 versions are being developed in a way that keeps the gameplay experience pretty much exactly the same as all the other platforms.”
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is an action role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix and serves as the second installment in the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy. The game continues the reimagined storyline of the original 1997 title, following Cloud Strife and his allies as they journey beyond Midgar in pursuit of Sephiroth. It was first released on PlayStation 5 on February 29, 2024, and later launched on Windows on January 23, 2025.
