Square Enix’s action role-playing game, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, has quietly received a localization tweak via a recent patch.
The aforementioned localization tweak (via ShinraArch on Twitter/X) in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth brings a change to the dialogue between Barret and his close friend Dyne, fixing an important continuity issue that has been present since launch.
Barret and Dyne were childhood friends from the town of Corel. In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, their shared past is explored more deeply compared to the original. Barret finds Dyne in Corel Prison, where he is tied up but still carries his old hatred. When Barret unties him, they have an emotionally charged conversation facing off against each other. They had opposing views about a Mako reactor in their town. Barret supported it, seeing economic benefit, while Dyne strongly opposed it. Dyne blames Barret for pushing for the reactor in the first place.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Localization Change
Marlene is brought up during the conversation. Dyne comes to know that his daughter is alive, but he accepts that he can’t come back into her life. It’s here that Barret originally said, “This is your chance to give your daughter a better life than we had.” After the update, he now says, “This is your chance to give the kids here a better life than what we had.”
In the Japanese version of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Barret is talking about wanting his wife Myrna to be able to live a better life, which means even the updated dialogue isn’t an accurate translation. That said, it makes more sense now.
A few days prior, Square Enix announced a new novel set within the expanding narrative of the Final Fantasy VII remake project. Titled Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Dear Destiny, the book will be released in Japan on January 30, 2026, and serves as a direct sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake – Traces of Two Pasts.
