Square Enix has re-released Final Fantasy VII on Steam, bringing an upgraded version of the classic RPG to PC players. Those who already own Final Fantasy VII 2013 Edition on the platform can redeem the new version at no additional cost, with both editions remaining available in their Steam libraries.
The re-release does not alter the original story, which follows Cloud Strife, a former member of Shinra’s elite SOLDIER unit, as he joins the rebel group Avalanche in their fight against the powerful Shinra Electric Power Company. Set in the sprawling city of Midgar and beyond, the game centers on Shinra’s control over the planet’s life force, known as Mako energy, and Cloud’s gradual involvement in a conflict that ultimately determines the fate of the world.
While the narrative remains unchanged, the new version introduces several quality-of-life features. Players can activate a 3x speed mode, allowing gameplay to run at up to three times the normal pace during battles, exploration, and select events. There is also an option to disable random encounters, though mandatory story battles must still be completed to progress.
A battle enhancement mode has been added as well, enabling players to restore HP and MP during combat and fill the Limit gauge to maximum. An autosave feature is also included, providing more flexibility during play sessions.
Square Enix confirmed that save data will not transfer between the two releases. Save files created in the 2013 Edition will only function with that version, and saves from the new release will be exclusive to the updated build.
With this re-release, Steam users gain access to a modernized version of one of the most influential role-playing games of its era, while existing owners can upgrade seamlessly without paying again.
