Lifetime sales of Square Enix’s action role-playing game, Final Fantasy XVI, have reached 3.5 million copies.
Japanese analyst HIdeki Yasuda has reported that Takashi Kiryu, President of Square Enix, has said that lifetime sales of Final Fantasy XVI have surpassed 3.5 million copies during the company’s recent financial results briefing. It’s worth noting that the action role-playing game had sold 3 million copies just 4 days after its PS5 launch on June 22, 2023. Since then, the game was also released for PC on September 17, 2024. The latest sales figure suggests that the title sold only 0.5 million copies nearly 2 years since its launch.

To put things into perspective, the lifetime sales of Final Fantasy XVI (3.5 million units) on PS5 are less than the day one launch sales of Final Fantasy XV (5 million units) on PS4 and Xbox One. While the former struggles to sell after its front-loaded launch sales, the latter went on to sell an impressive 10 million copies.
In terms of sales, last year’s PC launch of Final Fantasy XVI seems to have been received quite poorly. The game has over 14,000 mostly positive reviews on Valve’s digital distribution platform. This hasn’t done much to drive sales, however. It had an all-time peak concurrent player count of 27,508 during its launch period. The action role-playing game has been available on discount on both both the PlayStation Store and Steam, but this hasn’t done much to drive sales either.
It remains to be seen whether a potential release on Xbox Series X|S and/or Nintendo Switch 2 will give Final Fantasy XVI’s sales a much-needed boost. According to known insider and content creator Nate the Hate, the game should be set for release on Microsoft’s current-gen consoles in Spring 2025.
Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XVI is currently available on PS5 and PC. The game has yet to receive official PS5 Pro support.
