Here’s a first look at the world map featured in Pearl Abyss’ massive open-world action-adventure game, Crimson Desert.

In a new hands-on preview of the upcoming Crimson Desert, YouTuber JorRaptor (via TheRealZephryss on Twitter/X) has shared impressions of the game’s expansive world map, skill systems, and a variety of dynamic activities that populate the world. The game begins with a cinematic introduction that places players in control of the protagonist, Cliff, during an attack on his group by a rival clan known as the Black Bears. As per the content creator, the opening sequence runs for around 15 minutes, setting the tone with large-scale battles and dramatic cutscenes before players are exposed to the open-world.

Based on the gameplay impressions, the world map operates on two distinct layers. The primary layer is a vast open world filled with combat encounters, quests, and exploration opportunities. Above it float mysterious sky islands connected to the mysterious Abyss. These elevated areas feature puzzle-focused gameplay and appear to play a major role in the story. Each area will be occupied by different factions, and completing missions in those areas will increase your loyalty rank.

During exploration, the YouTuber discovered a quarry filled with enemies and a hidden “driller” boss. The mechanical foe, equipped with powerful drill attacks, required a strategic approach in order to defeat. The reward was an equally unusual drill arm weapon that can be used both in combat and for mining resources. The open world also features random encounters. During the preview, one such event involved a thief stealing money and attempting to escape through the streets, prompting a spontaneous pursuit. Although the world contains such unscripted moments, some design aspects still resemble those of online games, with NPCs remaining static rather than reacting dynamically to time of day or other changes.

As for the skill system in Crimson Desert, instead of traditional character classes, Cliff effectively combines multiple playstyles into a single class. Players unlock abilities through a large skill tree that offers new combat moves tied to different button combinations. The system supports a variety of combat styles, including melee attacks, ranged archery, aerial techniques, and even a surprisingly robust unarmed combat path.

Notice boards located at settlements offer bounty contracts that task players with tracking down criminals. Once located, these fugitives can attempt to flee, forcing players to chase, tackle, and restrain them before transporting them back to prison. The game also allows players to engage in crime themselves. Stealing items requires a special mask, and threatening citizens or attacking guards can quickly turn an entire town hostile. Players who are defeated after committing crimes are sent to prison and lose a significant amount of the in-game currency.
