GameScience has announced Black Myth: Zhong Kui, a new single-player action role-playing game inspired by ancient Chinese mythology. The title was revealed during Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 20, 2025, alongside its first CG trailer.
The game is based on the legend of Zhong Kui, a figure from Chinese folklore known as the banisher of evil spirits. According to GameScience, the project will serve as the second entry in its Black Myth series, which began with last year’s Black Myth: Wukong. The new title will be developed using Unreal Engine 5, though a release date and target platforms have not yet been announced.
The announcement marks a continuation of the studio’s approach of adapting classical Chinese tales into modern role-playing experiences. In official statements, GameScience noted that Black Myth: Zhong Kui aims to introduce fresh gameplay elements while also addressing shortcomings identified in Black Myth: Wukong. However, no specific details on new mechanics were shared during the initial reveal.
Zhong Kui’s story has deep roots in Chinese history and culture. First recorded in Tang Yishi and later detailed in Shen Kuo’s Dream Pool Essays during the Northern Song dynasty, Zhong Kui was said to have vowed to eradicate harmful spirits after his untimely death. Over time, his legend evolved into a popular tradition of placing his image on household doors to ward off evil, especially during the Lunar New Year.
GameScience’s previous title, Black Myth: Wukong, launched in August 2024 for PlayStation 5 and PC, followed by an Xbox Series X|S release in August 2025. The game achieved significant commercial success, with more than 10 million copies sold across platforms within its first three days.
With Black Myth: Zhong Kui, GameScience appears set to expand the series into a broader anthology of myth-inspired adventures. More information, including gameplay details and release timing, is expected in future updates.
