Gearbox Reveals Borderlands 4 Post-Launch Roadmap with Story Packs, New Vault Hunters, and Free Updates

by Salal Awan

With Borderlands 4 set to launch on September 12, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC—with the Nintendo Switch 2 release following on October 3—Gearbox Software has already outlined an ambitious roadmap of post-launch content. The plan includes a mix of paid expansions and free updates, designed to keep players exploring the chaotic world of Kairos well beyond release.

The developers confirmed that new story-driven expansions will form the core of the paid content strategy. Two Story Packs are planned for 2026, with the first arriving in the first quarter. Each Story Pack will introduce a new Vault Hunter, additional missions, unique cosmetics, and a separate playable zone. The debut expansion, titled Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, will feature Ellie in a cosmic horror-inspired narrative. More details are expected at Tokyo Game Show later in September.

Beyond large expansions, players can also expect smaller content drops known as Bounty Packs. These DLC installments will add new missions, bosses, cosmetics, and Legendary gear. Each pack will also come with a Vault Card, allowing players to unlock themed rewards and re-rollable loot through gameplay. The first Bounty Pack will focus on Rush, leader of the Outbounders faction, and will be included in the Deluxe and Super Deluxe Editions of the game.

In addition to the premium content, Gearbox is preparing several free updates. The most notable of these are Invincible Bosses, high-difficulty encounters planned to debut in late 2025, designed for players who have mastered their builds. Weekly activities will also play a central role, including rotating boss challenges, unique missions, and the return of Maurice’s Black Market Machine with its ever-changing inventory of coveted Legendary items.

Gearbox further confirmed that Pearlescent gear, a fan-favorite rarity above Legendary, will be introduced in early 2026 as a free addition alongside the second Bounty Pack. Seasonal mini-events are also planned, starting with Horrors of Kairos this October, bringing limited-time challenges, unique cosmetics, and fresh loot opportunities.

Finally, endgame systems such as Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode will continue to expand through updates, offering tougher challenges and rewarding players with some of the most powerful gear in the game.

With new Vault Hunters, robust DLC packs, and an ongoing schedule of free content, Borderlands 4 is shaping up to be a long-term experience for fans of the franchise.
