Gears 6 is rumored to be the next project by developer The Coalition following the cancellation of other games in development at the studio.
Speaking during the latest episode of GiantBomb’s Game Mess Mornings, Jeff Grubb claimed that Gears 4 and 5 developer, The Coalition, has canceled its smaller non-Gears project along with another project, and that its next game will be Gears 6.
According to Grubb, The Coalition had been doing other things alongside the smaller project, including its support work for Halo Infinite and the development of The Matrix Unreal Engine 5 demo with Epic. However, he claimed that the smaller project as well as another project have been canceled by the studio. He said that this was also reflected by the layoffs that happened at Microsoft and Xbox Game Studios, including The Coalition.
Grubb stated that, after the cancellation of two games by The Coalition, the studio has now moved on to the next entry in the Gears of War series, Gears 6. According to him, the developer has likely been working on the game over the course of the last year, and it is all set to be the studio’s next game.
In related new, Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski had previously shared the original direction he had planned to take the Locust in after Gears 3. He revealed the rough direction he wanted to take the Locust in after Gears of War 3, and he shared concept art for never before seen Locust character designs, including an underwater Boomer and Ticker.
Bleszinski also shared concept art for what appeared to be the main villain planned for Gears 4. He termed the menacing looking Locust as the “New Big Bad”. None of these concepts could materialize into an actual game, as development of the Gears series was moved to The Coalition once Xbox acquired rights to the IP. Meanwhile, Bleszinski went on to work on the multiplayer title, Lawbreakers.
