Ghost of Yōtei Debuts at No.1 in UK Charts Despite Lower Physical Sales

Ghost of Yōtei, the highly anticipated sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, has made a strong debut in the UK, securing the No.1 spot in boxed game sales during its launch week. According to The Game Business Founder Christopher Dring, the game performed exceptionally well, surpassing the second week of EA Sports FC 26 and selling nearly three times as many physical copies as Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 on Switch.

Dring commented on the game’s launch performance via X, noting, “The UK boxed launch for Ghost of Yotei is really, really good. It is No.1, which means it beat the second week of EA Sports FC 26 (!) and sold almost 3x what Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 on Switch did.” However, when asked how the game’s debut compared to Ghost of Tsushima, he added that physical copies were “down about 40%.” Despite the decline, Dring emphasized that the result remains “impressive,” given the current market dynamics.

It is worth noting that physical game sales represent a far smaller portion of PlayStation’s overall software revenue compared to 2020, when Ghost of Tsushima launched. Based on Sony’s Fiscal Year 2024 report, which ended in March 2025, physical software accounted for just 3% of PlayStation’s total gaming revenue, while digital software represented 20%. This shift indicates that the majority of Ghost of Yōtei’s sales likely occurred through digital storefronts, making the 40% drop in boxed sales far less concerning in the broader context.

The comparison to its predecessor also highlights the franchise’s growth over time. Ghost of Tsushima had sold over 13 million copies worldwide as of September 2024, according to Sony and Sucker Punch Productions. The game previously achieved 9.73 million units sold by July 2022, 5 million by November 2020, and 2.4 million in its first three days after release in July 2020.

Developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Ghost of Yōtei was released for PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025. Set in 1603 in Ezo, Japan, it follows Atsu, an onna-musha driven by vengeance against the “Yōtei Six,” a group responsible for the massacre of her family sixteen years earlier.
