Ghost of Yōtei Legends Co-Op Mode Detailed

Sucker Punch Productions has shared new details about Ghost of Yōtei Legends, the online cooperative multiplayer mode launching on March 10 as a free update for all owners of Ghost of Yōtei on PlayStation 5. Building on the foundations of the Legends mode introduced in Ghost of Tsushima, the new mode reimagines the game’s combat systems in a supernatural setting filled with mythological enemies and cooperative challenges.

According to the studio, development on the multiplayer component began alongside the main single-player campaign. A smaller team worked on adapting the game’s mechanics for multiplayer throughout development, with more developers joining the project as the campaign neared completion. This approach allowed the team to experiment with early systems before expanding the mode with additional content and polish later in development.

Ghost of Yōtei Legends draws inspiration from the Yōtei Six, a group of warlords who played a major role in the single-player story. In the multiplayer mode, the events surrounding these figures are retold as exaggerated legends passed down through generations. As a result, players face supernatural interpretations of these characters, including towering demonic bosses designed to challenge multiple players working together.

Each of the bosses commands a faction of enemies that players must defeat during missions. These groups include themed sub-bosses connected to the powers of their leader. For example, enemies aligned with the Kitsune include a frost-wielding elite known as the Snow Woman, while another faction features a summoner-type enemy associated with the Snake.

Players will be able to choose from several character classes when entering the mode. The available roles include Samurai, Archer, Mercenary, and Shinobi. Each class has a preferred weapon and its own technology tree, allowing players to unlock abilities and gear that shape their combat style. The Samurai focuses on the Odachi, the Archer uses the Yari, the Mercenary specializes in dual katanas, and the Shinobi relies on the Kusarigama. While each class is designed with a particular role in mind, players are not restricted to a single weapon type and can experiment with other equipment as they progress.

Progression in the mode is supported through four difficulty levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Missions can be replayed at any difficulty, with higher tiers offering greater rewards and faster experience gain. The game recommends certain gear levels for each difficulty, though players can still attempt harder challenges if they wish.

The mode will feature several mission types at launch. Two-player story missions focus on the legends surrounding each boss and are narrated as players progress through them. These lead into four-player Incursion missions where players fight through enemy-controlled territories before confronting the main boss. Another activity, Survival, supports four players defending multiple locations against waves of enemies while managing blessings and curses that dynamically affect each match.

A raid activity will also be introduced in April. This mission will focus on the final two members of the Yōtei Six, the Dragon and Lord Saito. Unlike other activities, the raid requires a full team of four players and is designed to emphasize coordination and communication.

In addition to combat activities, the mode introduces a new social lobby where players can prepare for missions while waiting for teammates. The area allows players to adjust builds, review achievements, unlock cosmetics, and test equipment. The lobby also includes small competitive diversions such as Zeni Hajiki, a coin flicking mini game from the single player campaign, along with Bamboo Strike challenges and a training area for practicing combat techniques.

Cosmetic customization is also a major part of the experience. Because the mode embraces a supernatural theme, the development team has created more imaginative armor and gear designs, including unusual helmets and animated cosmetic items that can be unlocked through gameplay.

Ghost of Yōtei Legends launches on March 10 as a free update for all players who own Ghost of Yōtei on PlayStation 5. Additional content, including the raid activity, is scheduled to arrive shortly after release.
