Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Ghost of Yotei has achieved a remarkable milestone in Japan, securing the fifth-largest PlayStation 5 launch to date. The action-adventure title, developed by Sucker Punch Productions, debuted with 120,196 physical units sold since its release on October 2, 2025. The game’s strong start marks Sony’s most successful first-party launch in Japan since Gran Turismo 7.
While Ghost of Yotei fell short of Ghost of Tsushima’s impressive PS4 debut, which reached 212,915 units sold at launch, its performance remains noteworthy considering Japan’s shifting market toward digital distribution. Analysts estimate a roughly 43 percent drop from Tsushima’s opening numbers, though this is largely attributed to the smaller physical retail market on the PS5 platform. Despite this decline, retailers across the country have reported sold-out stock and robust digital demand.
Reports from STV News indicated that Ghost of Yotei’s release generated immense excitement in Japan. The title “has taken Japan by storm since its release on October 2, 2025,” according to the outlet, with retailers in cities such as Sapporo experiencing continuous foot traffic throughout launch day. A spokesperson from Yodobashi Camera’s Sapporo branch confirmed that the game “is competing for the top spot among this year’s releases.”
Ghost of Yotei is a standalone sequel to the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima, set in 1603 in Ezo, Japan. The story follows Atsu, an onna-musha seeking vengeance against the Yōtei Six, a group responsible for her family’s massacre sixteen years earlier. The sequel continues Sucker Punch Productions’ tradition of blending historical authenticity with cinematic storytelling, earning generally positive reviews from critics upon release.
When compared with other major PlayStation 5 launches in Japan, Ghost of Yotei ranks just behind Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake and comfortably ahead of Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon and Like a Dragon 8: Infinite Wealth. Topping the charts remains Monster Hunter: Wilds with over 600,000 units sold at launch, followed by Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
Although physical launch numbers for Ghost of Yotei trail behind its predecessor, the strong digital performance and sell-out reports indicate that the title could continue to climb Japan’s sales charts in the coming weeks. Considering its early momentum and positive critical response, Ghost of Yotei appears poised to become one of Japan’s best-selling titles of 2025.
