Ghost of Yotei Sells 3.3 Million Copies as PlayStation 5 Shipments Surpass 84 Million Units

Sony has released its financial results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2025, detailing steady growth in its Game & Network Services (G&NS) segment alongside new milestones for the PlayStation 5 and its exclusive titles. The company confirmed that Ghost of Yotei has sold 3.3 million copies as of November 2, 2025, while total PlayStation 5 shipments have now exceeded 84.2 million units worldwide.

The G&NS segment generated ¥1,113.2 billion in sales revenue for the July–September quarter, a 3.9% increase year-over-year from ¥1,071.5 billion in Q2 FY24. However, operating income declined 13.3% to ¥120.4 billion, largely due to one-time charges linked to Bungie, the developer of Destiny 2. Sony recorded ¥49.8 billion in impairment losses, including ¥31.5 billion from Bungie’s intangible assets and an additional ¥18.3 billion tied to a correction of capitalized development costs.

Despite this setback, the overall gaming division remains on a growth trajectory. Sony revised its full-year sales forecast upward from ¥4,320 billion to ¥4,470 billion, while maintaining its operating income projection at ¥500 billion. Hardware sales remained stable, with 3.9 million PlayStation 5 units sold during the quarter—slightly higher than the same period last year—and hardware revenue rising to ¥230.9 billion. Software sales also grew modestly, with 80.3 million full game units sold in Q2, of which 6.3 million were first-party titles.

The company’s transition toward digital distribution continued, with digital full-game downloads accounting for 72% of total software sales. Digital software revenue reached ¥268.3 billion, while physical sales contributed ¥35.4 billion. Add-on content remained a major contributor at ¥299.8 billion, showing consistent engagement across live-service and downloadable content ecosystems.

Sony’s network services segment, which includes PlayStation Plus, recorded a 13.6% year-over-year increase to ¥182.7 billion in quarterly revenue, supported by steady subscription growth. Monthly active users reached 119 million, reflecting a slight seasonal dip from the previous quarter’s 123 million but still demonstrating a massive active user base.

On the software front, Ghost of Yotei emerged as a major first-party success, selling 3.3 million copies within its first 32 days on the market following its September 2024 launch. ASTRO BOT also performed solidly, reaching 1.5 million units sold within 58 days. Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 continued to dominate across platforms with 12 million copies sold, and legacy titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and God of War Ragnarök achieved 10 million and 15 million units respectively, underscoring Sony’s strong portfolio performance.

Sony attributed its steady revenue increase to continued strength in digital content and subscriptions, which now represent the largest portion of its gaming revenue. However, the company acknowledged the need to improve profitability following the Bungie impairment. Still, with the PlayStation 5 continuing to ship at a robust pace and a strong slate of releases expected during the holiday season, Sony remains confident in meeting its full-year forecast of ¥4,470 billion in sales and ¥500 billion in operating income by March 2026.
