Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that a remake of the original God of War Greek trilogy is in development, while simultaneously releasing a new spin-off titled God of War: Sons of Sparta on PlayStation 5. The announcements were made during Sony’s State of Play as part of the franchise’s 20th anniversary celebrations.
The studio revealed that the original trilogy, which began with the 2005 PlayStation 2 release of God of War, is being fully remade. The project is described as being in very early development, with no additional details shared at this time. According to the studio, further updates will be provided in the future once development has progressed.
In addition to the remake news, God of War: Sons of Sparta is available now on PS5. Developed in partnership with Mega Cat Studios, the title is a 2D action platformer set during Kratos’ youth. The story takes place during his time training at the Agoge alongside his brother Deimos and is considered canon within the broader God of War timeline.
Sons of Sparta features writing from the Santa Monica Studio team behind God of War 2018 and God of War Ragnarök. TC Carson reprises his role as the voice of Kratos, serving as the narrator of the story. The game adapts the series’ signature combat into a 2D format, with Kratos using a spear and shield along with divine artifacts known as the Gifts of Olympus. Players will encounter both reimagined classic enemies and new creatures inspired by Greek mythology, presented through hand drawn pixel art animation.
God of War: Sons of Sparta is available digitally in two editions. The Standard Edition is priced at $29.99, €29.99, £24.99, and ¥3480. The Digital Deluxe Edition is priced at $39.99, €39.99, £32.99, and ¥4480.
With a new spin-off launching immediately and a remake of the Greek saga now in development, Santa Monica Studio is marking the end of the franchise’s 20th anniversary year by revisiting Kratos’ origins while continuing to expand the series in new directions.
