A new God of War Ragnarok datamine has revealed a hidden ending dialogue that hints at the connection between Athena, The Rift, and the Higher Plane.

A new datamine of the God of War Ragnarok game files (via TheMorse_ on Reddit) has uncovered subtitle text from a hidden ending cutscene that features a dialogue exchange between what appear to be Athena and beings from the higher plane of existence.

The dialogue reads:

  • Atreus: “Wake up. I think we’re close.”
  • Mau: “Mau?”
  • Atreus: “Hey, you insisted on coming along. C’mon, let’s have a look.”
  • Mau: “Mau.”
  • Atreus: “I hope you’re right. Sounds like we found it.”
  • Robed Figure: “To lefkó fídi tha se fáei.”
  • Robed Figure: “One failed us. One rejected us.”
  • Athena: “We have a problem.”

The datamine uncovered a hidden cutscene focused on Atreus during his travels to other pantheons. He speaks with an individual named “Mau,” who communicates solely by repeating the word “Mau.” Atreus, gifted with divine linguistic ability, appears to be able to understand them. “Mau” is Egyptian for “cat” and is also associated with manifestations of the sun god Ra. This brings some credibility to ongoing rumors regarding the next God of War installment exploring Egyptian mythology.

The dialogue is followed by a scene involving a “Robed Figure”, who is presumably revealed to be Athena. Both Baldur and Freya were initially tagged with codenames before switching over to their actual names. The conversation implies a connection between her and the voices heard from the Rift during Odin’s obsession with the mask. The Reddit user believes that “One failed us” may refer to Odin, who could not fulfill whatever objective was tied to the mask and the Rift, while “One rejected us” may point to Atreus, who ultimately broke the mask rather than submit to its pull. Since her transcendence at the end of God of War 3, Athena has been depicted as existing on a higher plane of existence. If she is indeed connected to the Rift, it would confirm that these beings operate beyond pantheons.

Internal file tags suggest these scenes were meant to trigger post-game in the Realm Between Realms, marked with the label “RBRPO” (Realm Between Realms Post-Game). This gives rise another theory suggesting that the Realm Between Realms may not be exclusively Norse, but universal. References to these scenes reportedly existed in the day-one PS4 build of God of War Ragnarok, long before the release of the Valhalla DLC. Subtitle timestamps indicate the scenes were fully recorded, though no voice lines have been uncovered in the datamine.

The Reddit user pointed out that early elements of the God of War Ragnarok opening, including Atreus killing the bear and discovering Tyr’s survival, were present in God of War (2018)’s game files, suggesting that the newly revealed dialogue may find its way into the next entry. Only time will tell whether this ends up being the case, however.
