God of War Spin-Off Rumored to Be 2.5D Metroidvania Prequel Set in Greek Mythology

by Ali Haider

Recent reports from reputable industry insiders suggest that a new God of War spin-off is currently in development, and it may represent a significant departure from the mainline series. According to Tom Henderson and Jeff Grubb, this unannounced title will feature a 2.5D Metroidvania-style format and is believed to be a smaller, side-project exploring Kratos’ early years in ancient Greece.

The discussion was sparked on social media after a user asked Henderson whether this rumored God of War project might appear during the upcoming State of Play event. Henderson responded by saying that he had been hearing “a lot of scuttlebutt” about the project, describing it as a much smaller-scale production than initially expected. Jeff Grubb chimed in with a simple “Yeah.”

A recent report describes a new game that combines elements from God of War and Blasphemous, the latter being a critically acclaimed Metroidvania title recognized for its intricate level design and artistic style. The game is set in Greece and takes place before Kratos becomes a god, confirming that it serves as a narrative prequel. One of the major changes is that Kratos’ brother, Deimos, is expected to return in this story, marking his first significant appearance since God of War: Ghost of Sparta.

The game is reportedly under the supervision of Santa Monica Studio, the developers of the mainline series, with potential involvement from Mega Cat Studios, known for Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into The Pit.

Additionally, the report highlights the game’s visual direction, stating that it aims for a superior art style compared to Hades, another mythology-inspired indie title celebrated for its presentation. While no specific release date has been confirmed, earlier rumors suggested that the game might be released in 2025, possibly to coincide with the anniversary of the franchise.

This spin-off was first hinted at in March 2025, when Grubb stated that a new God of War project unrelated to the rumored remastered trilogy was in development. He suggested that the game would focus on Kratos’ relationship with Zeus, thereby positioning it firmly as a prequel set during the Greek saga rather than the more recent Norse arc.

Tom Henderson had previously addressed speculation about the next installment being set in Egypt, noting instead that his sources pointed to a return to Greek mythology. He also mentioned that players would control a younger Kratos, adding depth to the series’ evolving lore. The smaller scale and 2.5D perspective indicate that Sony may be exploring alternative formats to expand the God of War universe while the main team continues work on future AAA entries.

As of now, Sony has not officially acknowledged the existence of this spin-off, but with the June 4 State of Play approaching, the possibility of an announcement remains open. If the reports hold true, this title may offer longtime fans a fresh yet familiar experience, further enriching the mythology surrounding Kratos’ origins.
