God Of War Trilogy Remake To Feature New Combat System, Next Entry Reveal Likely In Late Summer 2026

Sony Interactive Entertainment and Santa Monica Studio’s God of War Trilogy remake is set to feature a brand new combat system.

At the recent Fan Expo Vancouver on February 16, 2026, content creator Fuzhpuzy had a brief chat with Christopher Judge, the actor who played Kratos in 2018’s God of War and its sequel, God of War Ragnarok. She started by asking him whether he’ll be reprising his role in the recently announced remake, to which he responded by saying that TC Carlson, the actor who played Kratos in the original trilogy, will be returning to play the character.

Judge also clarified that the God of War Trilogy remake is not a reboot, though he added that it will feature more content as well as a brand new combat system. He also expects the game to be running on modern technology. “Well, it’s going to be TC because it’s not a reboot, but probably a new technology in it, and more stuff, a new fighting system.”

In addition, Judge told the content creator that she’ll likely be hearing about what he’s doing the late summer this year. This is in line with what insiders Nate the Hate and shinobi602 have claimed. Both expect Santa Monica Studio director Cory Barlog’s next title to be announced sometime around the summer period. According to shinobi602, the game may be revealed at the May, 2026, State of Play presentation or Summer Games Fest 2026. He added that if the game doesn’t get announced by then, it will likely be because the development team pushed the release out further or ended up making the reveal-to-release window shorter. As for its release window, unless a major delay happens, Nate expects the game to be released in 2027.

During the recent episode of the Insider Gaming podcast, insider and co-host Tom Henderson mentioned hearing that the next mainline installment in the God of War series, likely to be the aforementioned Barlog-led project, will have Kratos wielding a scythe in addition to a scimitar-like curved sword.
