In response to a question regarding what Polyphony Digital would like to achieve in the future that cannot be achieved with modern hardware, or any elements that are still lacking in Gran Turismo, Yamauchi stated that the studio already has some ideas in mind. The development team has started to work on the next entry, but he was unable to share any further details regarding the project at this point in time. There are likely some elements of the driving simulator experience in Gran Turismo 7 that are not yet aligned with Yamauchi’s vision, and they’ll likely be incorporated in the next entry.

The current entry in the Gran Turismo series, Gran Turismo 7, was developed by Polyphony Digital and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The game is the eighth chapter in the mainline Gran Turismo series. It was revealed during the PlayStation 5 reveal event on June 11, 2020, and was released on March 4, 2022 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, making it the series’ first multi-console entry.

The game uses the PlayStation 5’s improved processing capabilities, dedicated ray-tracing hardware, custom solid-state drive storage, Tempest Engine, and DualSense controller to support features like advanced haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, real-time ray tracing features during replays, 3D spatial audio, and faster loading times. Gran Turismo 7 on PlayStation 5 also has 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, as well as compatibility for high dynamic range.

The game is all set to receive PSVR2 support via a free update, which will allow players to experience all of the game’s mode in virtual reality, with support for modern features like eye tracking and haptics.
