The possibility of GTA VI running at 60 fps on PS5 Pro is unlikely due to the game’s heavy CPU workload, according to Digital Foundry.
During the latest episode of Digital Foundry’s DF Direct Weekly podcast, the crew responded to a supporter question regarding a recent rumor on PS5 Pro being the only current-gen console that will be able to run GTA VI at 60 fps. The tech analysts believe it’s unlikely.
The rumor, which originated from a vague social media post, claimed that Rockstar Games is working closely with Sony engineers to deliver a 60 fps Performance mode for GTA VI on Sony Interactive Entertainment’s mid-gen hardware. However, Digital Foundry argued that this is unlikely, citing the open world game’s CPU intensive world simulation and ray tracing.
Digital Foundry noted that all titles developed by Rockstar Games have historically launched on consoles with a 30 fps frame rate target, mainly due to the heavy CPU load required for world simulation. According to the tech analysts, GTA VI appears to follow the same trajectory with its densely packed vehicles and pedestrians. Although the PS5 Pro does offer improved hardware, including a 10% improvement in CPU clocks, Digital Foundry believes this increase is not nearly enough to offset the significant computational load imposed by the game’s advanced ray tracing features and expansive world simulation.
The tech analysts also dismissed the idea of using frame generation to artificially boost frame rate from 30 to 60 fps due to the massive increase in input latency, which could make the game less responsive and, in turn, less enjoyable. While Rockstar Games could theoretically implement a 60fps mode with heavy optimizations or a stripped-down performance profile, Digital Foundry believes that there’s currently no credible evidence to support such an approach. They didn’t rule out a 40 fps mode, however.
Ultimately, if a Performance mode targeting 60 fps does exist for the PS5 Pro version of GTA VI, it’s likely to receive graphical cutbacks similar to those in Xbox Series S version.
