Rockstar Games’ upcoming open world action-adventure game, GTA VI, is not yet content complete, the current release date is not 100% certain.
During a recent podcast (via GTAVI_Countdown on Twitter/X), Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier shared an update on the development of GTA VI, indicating that the game is not yet content complete, and that internally, its current release date isn’t 100% certain. The last information he received from sources familiar with the matter suggests that developers at Rockstar Games are still actively finalizing missions, adding new content, and making decisions about what ultimately makes it into the final title.
This puts the game in a position where the creative phase of development has not fully wrapped, delaying the point at which the studio can move entirely into large-scale bug fixing and optimization. As a result, Schreier believes it is difficult to say with confidence whether GTA VI will meet its November 19, 2026, release, noting that he doesn’t think anyone at Rockstar is 100% certain they’ll make that date. That said, he believes the currently announced date feels a bit more realistic than prior release windows of Fall 2025 and May 2026.
Schreier said that Rockstar Games simply cannot afford to release the game in a compromised or unfinished state. With unprecedented hype, immense financial stakes, and years of anticipation, anything short of perfection could have serious consequences. In fact, Schreier bluntly stated that the entire stock value of Take-Two Interactive effectively lives or dies on this release. Because of this, Rockstar and Take-Two would likely prefer to delay the game again rather than ship it before it meets their internal standards.
Schreier noted that Take-Two’s fiscal year does not end until late March 2027, giving the company some flexibility if it still wants to launch GTA VI within the same fiscal year, even if the calendar release slips. He also mentioned that PlayStation is considered the game’s main platform and that Sony Interactive Entertainment is reportedly planning much of its upcoming lineup around Rockstar’s release.
