A series of clarifications from Bloomberg editor Jason Schreier has confirmed that Guerrilla Games is developing its own standalone multiplayer Horizon title, separate from the newly announced MMO project being handled by NCSoft. The comments follow the reveal of Horizon Steel Frontiers at G-Star 2025, which prompted questions about how many multiplayer entries Sony intends to produce for the franchise.
Responding to posts on social media, Schreier wrote that the two projects should not be confused. In his words, “Just to clear up some confusion I’ve seen, the newly announced NCSoft Horizon MMO is different from the multiplayer Horizon game that’s in development at Guerrilla Games. That one is Guerrilla’s next big project.” He added in a later exchange that “The MMO is meant for Asian markets, I think,” suggesting a strategic split in audience and regional focus.
Horizon Steel Frontiers, developed by NCSoft in collaboration with Guerrilla, is a free to play, third person MMORPG designed as a large scale co op survival experience. Players assume the role of customized “Descendant” machine hunters and take part in raids, multi stage boss encounters, and world events that draw on Monster Hunter style mechanics. Combat emphasizes exploiting weak points, crafting tools, and coordinating with teammates against massive enemies.
The title was officially unveiled during G-Star 2025 and is planned for launch in the second half of 2026 or later. It will be available on PC through NCSoft’s PURPLE platform and on iOS and Android devices, but it will not launch on PlayStation 5, a notable omission given Sony’s ownership of the Horizon brand. This strategy aligns with NCSoft’s established expertise in mobile and PC driven MMO markets in Asia.
Meanwhile, Guerrilla Games’ unannounced multiplayer Horizon project remains in internal development as the studio’s next major initiative. While Sony has not yet revealed details, the title is expected to target PlayStation 5 and is separate from NCSoft’s cross platform MMO. Previous statements from Guerrilla have indicated that the studio has long been exploring ways to expand the franchise through co op and online systems, suggesting a project that leans more closely into the action RPG foundations of Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West.
