Fresh rumors have emerged regarding the long-speculated remake of Halo Combat Evolved. According to multiple sources cited in a recent report, the project is allegedly being handled by Abstraction, a Dutch studio acquired by Virtuos in late 2024.
The remake is said to be built on a hybrid engine that combines elements of Bungie’s classic Blam engine, specifically the version used in Halo Reach, with Unreal Engine 5 to achieve modern visuals. This approach would theoretically preserve the familiar mechanics of the original titles while updating the presentation for current-generation platforms.
The studio behind the project, Abstraction, has a history with the Halo franchise. Between 2021 and 2022, it worked with 343 Industries on accessibility features for Halo: The Master Chief Collection, introducing new options across visual, auditory, motor, and gameplay categories. Beyond Halo, Abstraction has also contributed to major franchises including Mass Effect, Baldur’s Gate, and Dune Awakening. Now operating under Virtuos, the studio has access to considerable resources, making it a strong candidate for such a high-profile undertaking.
Evidence supporting the claim includes public information from Abstraction’s website, which lists Halo Studios as a partner, as well as LinkedIn activity from a technical artist at the studio. His profile references work on a “high-profile unannounced AAA title,” including campaign mission design from early concepts through to final polish, which has fueled further speculation about its connection to Halo Combat Evolved.
While the information has not been confirmed by Microsoft or 343 Industries, the consistency across multiple independent sources has strengthened confidence in the rumor. If accurate, the remake would mark the first major revisit to the game that launched the Halo franchise in over a decade, following 2011’s Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary.
As with all unverified reports, fans are advised to treat the details with caution until an official announcement is made. Still, the possibility of Abstraction revisiting Master Chief’s original adventure with modern technology has already sparked excitement across the Halo community.
