Hamaguchi Confirms Switch 2 Versions of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Part 3 Will Not Be Compromised

Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and the third entry in the remake trilogy will deliver the same gameplay experience on Nintendo Switch 2 as on other platforms. The assurance comes directly from series director Naoki Hamaguchi, who stated that both titles are currently in development for Nintendo Switch 2 alongside versions for other consoles. His comments were aimed at addressing concerns from players about potential differences between platform releases.

Hamaguchi confirmed that development is underway not only for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second installment in the trilogy, but also for the still untitled Part 3. He said, “I can reassure players that we’re working on the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second game in the series, and the third game too. They are being worked on for Nintendo Switch 2 alongside the other platforms right now.” This statement establishes that the Switch 2 versions are being developed in parallel rather than as delayed or scaled-down ports.

Addressing gameplay parity more directly, Hamaguchi emphasized a personal development philosophy focused on consistency across hardware. He explained, “I’ve got a personal policy where I don’t want to make any versions of my games different or offer a different gameplay experience just because they’re on different hardware.” He added that varying gameplay between platforms could create confusion for players deciding which version to purchase, something he wants to avoid. According to Hamaguchi, “The Nintendo Switch 2 versions are being developed in a way that keeps the gameplay experience pretty much exactly the same as all the other platforms.”

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second title in Square Enix’s remake trilogy and follows Final Fantasy VII Remake. It originally launched on PlayStation 5 on February 29, 2024, before arriving on PC on January 23, 2025. The game expands the story beyond Midgar into a larger world and introduces new combat mechanics, including the Synergy system, while building on the foundation of the first remake entry.

While Rebirth is currently available on PlayStation 5 and PC, Square Enix has confirmed that it will also launch on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S. The final chapter, Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3, is also in active development, with its core gameplay and scenario reported as complete.
