The Last of Us TV series will likely come to an end with Season 3, according to HBO Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys.

Recent comments from HBO Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys (via Winter is Coming) suggest that The Last of Us TV series may be coming to an end with Season 3. The second season began adapting The Last of Us Part II, the second entry in Naughty Dog’s game series. True to the structure of the title, season 2 ended on a dramatic cliffhanger, just as the narrative was poised to shift perspectives. Viewers were left at the point where the story jumps back in time and transitions from Ellie’s violent quest for revenge to the viewpoint of Abby, the WLF soldier responsible for killing Joel.

For players familiar with the game, this pivot happens just under halfway through The Last of Us Part II. A substantial portion of the story remains, detailing Abby’s experiences during the same three-day period in Seattle that Ellie rampages through the city, followed by a lengthy epilogue that brings the story to a haunting and emotionally charged conclusion. Because of this, showrunner Craig Mazin previously floated the idea that the adaptation may require a fourth season to fully do the story justice.

However, when asked whether season 3 would be the final chapter of the series, Bloys responded, “It certainly seems that way, but on decisions like that, we will defer to the showrunners. So you can ask them.” His comment does leave some room for flexibility, but it also indicates that HBO views season 3 as a natural concluding point for the show. Wrapping up the second game’s story in the third season certainly seems plausible.

Season 3 of The Last of Us HBO series is expected to begin filming in the coming months, and more concrete details are likely to emerge soon.
