Ninja Theory has released the PlayStation 5 version of its acclaimed 2017 title, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, offering current owners a free upgrade from the PlayStation 4 edition. The launch coincides with the release of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, expanding the series’ presence on Sony’s latest console.
According to PlayStation Store backend tracker PlayStationGameSize, the PS5 upgrade comes in at 12.403 GB (version 01.002.000). In comparison, the recently released sequel has a significantly larger footprint at 41.121 GB (version 01.001.000). Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II is priced at 49.99 USD for the standard edition, with pre-load available from August 10 ahead of its August 12 release at 8 a.m. GMT. The original game is also included in the Deluxe Edition of the sequel.
Ninja Theory confirmed that the upgraded Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is optimized for both PS5 and PS5 Pro. Players who already own the PS4 version can download the new edition at no extra cost, even without purchasing Hellblade II. Responding to fan questions, the developer also stated that the first game will be available for purchase separately on PS5.
Originally released in August 2017 for PlayStation 4 and Windows, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice later came to Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X/S before arriving on PS5 in August 2025. The title was lauded for its artistic presentation, nuanced portrayal of psychosis, and strong performance from lead actress Melina Juergens. By June 2018, it had sold over one million copies. The sequel, released in May 2024, builds upon the narrative and themes that made the first installment a standout in the action-adventure genre.
This latest upgrade ensures that both newcomers and returning players can experience Senua’s journey with improved performance and visuals tailored to modern PlayStation hardware.
