Hollow Knight Silksong Expansion and Switch 2 Update Announced

by Greg Martin

Team Cherry has shared a wide ranging update on the future of the Hollow Knight series, confirming a major free expansion for Hollow Knight Silksong, a refreshed release of the original Hollow Knight for Nintendo Switch 2, and a slate of updates coming to existing versions of the games. The studio also revealed that Silksong has surpassed 7 million copies sold, with additional players accessing the game through Xbox Game Pass.

In a message addressed to the community, the developers reflected on Silksong’s launch year and the scale of its audience, describing the response as far beyond expectations. Team Cherry highlighted the growth of the player community, pointing to fan art, mods, creative strategies, and ongoing support between players as key motivations for continuing to expand the game.

The studio confirmed that Silksong’s first major expansion is already in active development. While details remain limited, the teaser points to a nautical theme, with new areas, bosses, tools, and additional content planned. The expansion, titled Hollow Knight Silksong Sea of Sorrow, will be released in 2026 and will be available for free to all players. Team Cherry said more information will be shared closer to launch.

Alongside Silksong, Team Cherry announced that it is working on an updated version of the original Hollow Knight for Nintendo Switch 2. This new edition will incorporate the same technical enhancements that Silksong received on the platform, including higher frame rate modes, increased resolutions, and additional graphical effects. Players who already own Hollow Knight on Nintendo Switch will be able to upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition at no additional cost when it launches in 2026.

In preparation for that release, updates are also coming to all current platform versions of Hollow Knight. These updates will introduce new features and bug fixes, ensuring parity across platforms. PC players can already access many of these improvements through public beta branches on Steam and GOG, which include full support for 16:10 and 21:9 aspect ratios, catering to Steam Deck users and ultrawide monitor setups. Further fixes and enhancements are planned ahead of the full rollout next year.

To mark Silksong’s release, Team Cherry also revealed a new line of mini figurines created in collaboration with Studio Tyto and Fangamer. The collection features Hornet alongside other characters from the game and is available for pre order now, either individually or as a complete set. Additional Silksong themed merchandise is also available through Fangamer.

The studio added that the Hollow Knight games will appear in various sales during the holiday period, offering players the chance to pick up discounted copies. Team Cherry closed by noting that, despite being a small team, it has even more plans for 2026 that have yet to be revealed. For now, the developers are taking a short break before returning to work ahead of what they describe as a significant year for the series.
