Hollow Knight: Silksong has finally arrived, but as with most large releases, some players are encountering technical and gameplay-related issues. Team Cherry has acknowledged many of these problems and confirmed that fixes are already in progress. While most will be resolved in an upcoming patch, players can apply temporary solutions in the meantime to keep their adventure moving forward.
Below is a breakdown of the most common known issues, along with available workarounds and official notes from the developers.
Skull King Disappearing from Bone Bottom
- Issue: Skull King may vanish if the player leaves or dies during the invasion, leaving NPCs, shops, and the wishwall inactive.
- Temporary Fix:
- Travel via bellway to another area (not Bone Bottom or the Marrow).
- Rest at a bench.
- Return to Bone Bottom. There is about a 30 percent chance the Skull King will reappear.
- Repeat if necessary until the boss spawns again.
- Status: Fixed internally. The patch will restore missing cloaks and needles retroactively.
Slab Escape Battle – Permanent Cloakless Bug
- Issue: Dying while landing the killing blow in the Slab escape final wave may remove the cloak permanently.
- Temporary Fix:
- Console: Roll back to the “Caged” auto save from the profile menu.
- Steam/GOG: Use the public-beta branch to restore your cloak.
- Status: Fix coming in next patch with retroactive restoration.
Quick-Map Soft-Lock
- Issue: Rare soft-lock when using quick-map.
- Temporary Fix: Use the Save and Quit function to return to the main menu.
- Status: Fixed internally, patch pending.
Lace Tool Deflect Soft-Lock
- Issue: Throwing a tool at Lace in Deep Docks can freeze player controls.
- Temporary Fix: Use Save and Quit.
- Status: Fixed internally.
Chapel of the Reaper Soft-Lock
- Issue: Silk Snipper may become stuck out of bounds, halting battle progression.
- Temporary Fix: Use Save and Quit.
- Status: Fixed internally.
Controller Detection Issues (PC)
- Issue: Some controllers are not being recognized or are functioning incorrectly.
- Status: Still under investigation.
Beast in the Bells Soft-Lock
- Issue: Acquiring the main task at the Bilewater Bellway may prevent entry.
- Temporary Fix:
- Console: Roll back to most recent auto save.
- Steam/GOG: Switch temporarily to public-beta to complete quest.
- Status: Fix confirmed for upcoming patch, retroactive progression restoration included.
Late Game Cursed State Bug
- Issue: Accepting the Rite of Rebirth wish after visiting Benjin & Crull may lock the player into a permanent cursed state.
- Status: Fix in next patch (retroactive). Public-beta PC patch to arrive soon.
Additional Save File and Technical Issues
- Auto Save Help: Players can revert to earlier checkpoints from the Select Profile menu. Be aware this overwrites the current save file.
- Save File Locations (PC):
- Windows: %USERPROFILE%/AppData/LocalLow/Team Cherry/Hollow Knight Silksong/
- Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/unity.Team-Cherry.Silksong/
- Linux: ~/.config/unity3d/Team Cherry/Hollow Knight Silksong/
- Save Could Not Be Written: Often caused by antivirus blocking write permissions. Add an exception and check storage space.
- Version Incompatible Save: Indicates the file was opened on a newer build and cannot be loaded in an older version.
- Cutscenes Not Playing (Windows): Missing Microsoft Media Foundation components may cause black screens. Installing the Media Feature Pack should resolve the issue.
While these issues may cause temporary frustration, Team Cherry has confirmed that many are already resolved internally and will be patched across all platforms soon. Most fixes will apply retroactively, ensuring players stuck in broken states can continue their journey once updates roll out. In the meantime, the outlined temporary solutions can help minimize disruption.
