Hollow Knight Silksong Switch 2 vs Switch Comparison Highlights Huge Gap in Resolution and Performance

by Salal Awan

A fresh technical analysis has outlined the differences between Hollow Knight: Silksong on the original Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2, revealing just how much of a boost the sequel to Hollow Knight receives on modern hardware.

On Switch 2, players have access to two distinct display modes. When connected to a television, the game can be played either at 2160p with 60 frames per second or at 1080p with 120 frames per second. In handheld mode, the default setting is 1080p at 120 frames per second, offering a level of visual clarity and fluidity far beyond what the original hardware could provide. By comparison, the base Switch version runs at a consistent 720p in both docked and handheld modes, maintaining 60 frames per second.

Beyond resolution, the Switch 2 edition benefits from faster load times, cutting them nearly in half compared to the original Switch. Minor visual improvements are also present, with enhancements to particle effects and smoother depth of field. While both versions maintain steady performance, occasional slowdowns can occur when landing attacks or receiving hits. However, this is an intentional design choice carried over from the first Hollow Knight, where the screen briefly freezes to emphasize impact.

The gulf in resolution between the two systems is perhaps the most striking difference, particularly when docked, where Switch 2’s 4K support dramatically sharpens the look of Pharloom’s detailed environments. Still, the original Switch version remains fully playable and stable. Importantly, players who already own the game on Switch can upgrade to the Switch 2 version at no additional cost, ensuring no one is left behind.

Released on September 4, 2025, Hollow Knight: Silksong expands upon Team Cherry’s acclaimed 2017 Metroidvania. Players step into the role of Hornet, navigating the mysterious land of Pharloom with faster traversal, needle-based combat, and a new quest system designed to deepen exploration. Initially conceived as downloadable content for Hollow Knight, the project eventually grew into a full standalone sequel.
