Hollow Knight Silksong Will Launch Without Early Reviews

Hollow Knight: Silksong is set to release on September 4, but players hoping to read reviews ahead of time may be disappointed. Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier confirmed that developer Team Cherry will not be distributing early review codes for the highly anticipated sequel.

According to Schreier, the decision was based on fairness to fans who have supported the project from the start. “In case you’re wondering: Team Cherry told me they don’t plan on sending out early codes for Silksong (they felt like it’d be unfair for critics to be playing before Kickstarter backers and other players), so don’t expect to see reviews until after the game comes out,” he stated on social media.

This means that, unlike many major releases where critics publish reviews before launch, impressions of Silksong will arrive only once the game is publicly available. The decision highlights Team Cherry’s commitment to treating all players fairly, but it also leaves potential buyers without crucial early insights.

Silksong has been in development for nearly seven years. The lengthy timeline, according to the studio’s Ari Gibson and William Pellen, was not the result of setbacks or financial hurdles, but rather the sheer scope of the game and the team’s creative process. The developers recently told Bloomberg that the project was always moving forward, with new ideas expanding its scale.

Beyond launch, Team Cherry is already preparing post-release support, including plans for future content and potential downloadable expansions. “Launching it is obviously quite exciting,” Pellen explained. “What comes after for us is equally as exciting.” Gibson added that the team has an ambitious roadmap in mind for the sequel.

Hollow Knight: Silksong will be available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2. The game will also launch day one on Xbox Game Pass.
