Bethesda Game Studios’ latest action role-playing game, Starfield, is now available on PC, and if you’re looking to enable Nvidia DLSS or Intel XeSS in the game, read ahead.
Unfortunately, Starfield does not include official support for DLSS or XeSS, but thanks to a diligent modder known as PureDark, who came up with a workaround for Nvidia and Intel users with supported GPUs within hours of its release, it is now possible to enable the image reconstruction technology in the game.
How To Enable DLSS & XeSS In Starfield
Follow the steps outlined below in order to enable Nvidia DLSS in the PC version of Starfield.
- Make sure that you’re using an Nvidia GPU that supports DLSS (20XX, 20XX, or 40XX series) or an Intel GPU
- Download the mod files from here
- Extract the mod to the game’s root folder
- Install Upscaler Base Plugin, place the PDPerfplugin.dll into mods/UpscalerBasePlugin folder.
- You need to download nvngx_dlss.dll or libxess.dll, and place them into mods/UpscalerBasePlugin folder
- If you can’t get step 2 and 3 working properly, place the dlls the same folder as Starfield.exe
- Press END in the game to open the menu for the upscaler, and you can then select DLSS or XeSS
- You’ll need to enable FSR2 in the game’s settings, as this mod replaces FSR2 with DLSS/XeSS
- There’s no quality levels with this mod, though the render scaling ratio can be changed in the game’s settings
Additionally, the modder has included a ReShade CAS effect because DLSS has no intergrated sharpener anymore. If users wish to install another ReShade preset, they will need to rename the dxgi.dll from ReShade to d3d12.dll after installation and extract the dxgi.dll from the mod once again.
Regarding performance gains, the modder has stated that if no improvement in frame rate is seen, you are most likely CPU limited. Despite that, the DLSS pipeline should still deliver superior anti-aliasing. Furthermore, DLAA can also be used, though it will come with some performance cost.
