How To Pair A DualSense Controller To Multiple Devices With The Latest PS5 Update

by Greg Martin

Sony has rolled out a fresh system update for PlayStation 5, and alongside it comes an important DualSense controller upgrade. Until now, players had to go through the pairing process each time they wanted to connect their controller to a different device, whether it was a console, PC, Mac, or smartphone. The new update changes that restriction, allowing the DualSense and DualSense Edge to register up to four devices at once.

The result is much greater convenience. Imagine wrapping up a session on your PS5, then moving seamlessly to your PC for another round of gaming without the hassle of repairing the controller. You could even switch to a mobile device to enjoy Remote Play, all from the same gamepad. This new feature makes the DualSense more versatile than before.

How To Pair Your Controller Across Multiple Devices

Before starting, disconnect any USB cable attached to your controller. Make sure the light bar and player indicator are off. If they are still on, hold the PS button until the lights go dark.

Follow these steps to pair:

  1. Press and hold one of the action buttons (triangle, circle, cross, or square) together with the PS button for at least five seconds. The light bar and player indicator will flash twice.
  2. On your chosen device, turn on Bluetooth and search for new devices.
  3. Select your DualSense controller from the list. Once connected, the light bar will glow steadily, and the player indicator will blink to show which slot the device has been assigned to.

Each action button corresponds to a different slot, letting you store up to four devices at once.

How To Switch Between Devices

Switching between registered devices is as simple as holding the PS button and the relevant action button for about three seconds. Release once the light bar and indicators begin to blink. The controller will then connect to the device linked to that slot.

Here is a breakdown of the slot assignments:

  • Slot 1: PS button + Triangle button → One light on → Example: PS5
  • Slot 2: PS button + Circle button → Two lights on → Example: PS5 Pro
  • Slot 3: PS button + Cross button → Three lights on → Example: Windows PC
  • Slot 4: PS button + Square button → Four lights on → Example: iPhone

With this system, moving between devices is no longer a chore but a matter of a button press.

This feature makes the DualSense controller significantly more practical, particularly for players who divide their time across multiple platforms. Instead of being tied down by repeated pairing, users now have a streamlined way to shift between console, PC, and mobile play. It is a small adjustment, but one that makes a noticeable difference in everyday use.
