How To Run FSR4 On Steam Deck And Other Linux Devices

by Ali Haider

The latest iteration of AMD’s upscaling technology, FSR4, was initially designed for RDNA4 graphics cards. Thanks to modders, however, the feature has been adapted to work on RDNA2 and RDNA3 hardware, which includes the Steam Deck, Steam OS, and Linux systems. The result is a new way for handheld and Linux players to improve image quality in supported titles, though with a few compromises in performance.

Installing FSR4 requires some manual setup, but once configured, players can enjoy sharper detail, reduced shimmering, and generally cleaner visuals compared to earlier versions like FSR 2.1. It is worth noting that these improvements often come with reduced frame rates, making frame caps or performance tweaks advisable.

How To Install FSR4 On Steam Deck

  1. Download the required files
  2. Prepare the DLL files
    • Create a new folder and place the three DLL files from the SDK package inside (frame generation, loader, and upscaler).
    • Rename the loader DLL by removing the “loader_” prefix.
    • Replace the upscaler DLL with the modded version, overwriting the original.
  3. Apply to a game
    • Navigate to the game’s local installation folder.
    • Find the file named AMD FidelityFXDX12.dll and rename it by adding “old” to the end. This step ensures you can revert back to FSR3 if needed.
    • Copy the three prepared DLL files into the same folder.

This method works for titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Spider-Man 2, with identical installation steps.

Performance And Visual Impact

When tested in Cyberpunk 2077 on the Steam Deck using the handheld’s preset, FSR4 noticeably reduced shimmering and added finer detail compared to FSR 2.1. The trade-off, however, was performance, with frame rates falling from around 45 frames per second to the mid-30s.

In Spider-Man 2, the upgrade to FSR4 produced cleaner visuals and sharper edges. But the frame rate fluctuated more than with FSR 2.1, so capping gameplay at 30 frames per second offered the most stable experience.

Should You Use FSR4 On Steam Deck

FSR4 on Steam Deck is still an unofficial modification, but it delivers a real boost in image quality for demanding games. Players who prioritize visual clarity over higher frame rates may find the trade-off worthwhile. On the other hand, those seeking consistent, smooth performance may prefer sticking with earlier versions until more optimized support becomes available.
