Nintendo recently introduced Handheld Mode Boost as part of the Nintendo Switch 2 system update 22.0.0, giving players a new way to enhance performance while playing in handheld mode. The feature allows compatible Nintendo Switch software to run as if the system were docked in TV mode, which can lead to improved visuals and performance in certain cases.
To enable or disable Handheld Mode Boost, users need to access the System Settings from the HOME Menu. From there, scroll down and select System, then navigate to Nintendo Switch Software Handling. Inside this menu, the Handheld Mode Boost option can be toggled on or off.
While the feature can improve visual quality, it comes with several trade-offs. Enabling Handheld Mode Boost may increase the system’s power consumption, which can reduce battery life during extended play sessions. The impact of the feature also depends on the game, as some Nintendo Switch titles may not show any noticeable changes, and the setting does not affect software designed specifically for Nintendo Switch 2.
There are also functional limitations to consider. Because the system is effectively forced into TV mode behavior, certain in-game instructions may not display correctly or function as intended. The feature may also disable touchscreen functionality for Nintendo Switch software. In addition, attached Joy Con 2 controllers will be treated as a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, and players who wish to use other controllers will need to detach the Joy Con 2 from the console first.
Handheld Mode Boost is one of several additions introduced in the latest system update, reflecting Nintendo’s ongoing efforts to expand system-level options for players on the Switch 2.
