Bethesda Softworks and MachineGames’ upcoming action adventure game, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, will feature cinematics that are nearly equivalent to the duration of a full length movie.
During an interview, Todd Howard, executive producer at Bethesda Softworks, mentioned that developer Machine Games is aiming to translate the cinematic look and feel of the franchise to a playable experience. As such, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will feature over three hours of cinematics, which will allow fans to reflect what they know about the movies.
Howard mentioned that, for him, the challenge of capturing the cinematic feel of the Indiana Jones movies took him back to his feelings about the Fallout series. He said that it’s less about 1:1 accuracy than it is nailing the spirit. In both cases, he believes that one has to ignore the original presentation and think about the world and characters.
Elsewhere during the interview, Howard revealed that he initially didn’t want Baker for the role of Indiana Jones in The Great Circle. When they finally connected, Baker recalls that Howard openly admitted that he wasn’t the first choice for the role. However, Baker took no offense and appreciated Howard’s honesty. Casting Harrison Ford, who originally performed the character in the movies, wasn’t a strong consideration due to the character’s age in The Great Circle. Howard explains, “We felt for this project and the time period it was set in, we cast a pretty wide net.” After auditioning hundreds, they ultimately selected Baker. Howard told Baker on the Zoom call, “I’ll have you know, we did a blind taste test, and people chose you every time.”
Indiana Jones and The Great Circle is set for release for PC and Xbox Series X|S on December 9, 2024., and PlayStation 5 sometime in early 2025. The game spans numerous real-world locales such as Rome, Thailand, Egypt, Shanghai and the Himalayas.
