Director James Gunn has addressed several topics, ranging from Superman’s financial expectations to ongoing speculation about The Batman Part II during a recent online Q&A with fans on Threads. His comments come as Superman continues its strong box office run, with the film set to release digitally later this month.
When asked about online claims that Superman would need to gross $650 million to be considered profitable, Gunn dismissed the figure outright. “Absolutely false. Anyone saying that doesn’t have an understanding of the film business – and we would be idiots to make a first-in-a-franchise film that would need to make that much to be profitable,” he said.
Gunn also shared insights into the creative process, revealing that the end-credits song, Punkrocker, had been chosen from the first draft. He noted that he had watched the film countless times during post-production, sometimes in full and other times in segments while editing. Addressing fan theories about the final scenes featuring the Kents, Gunn clarified, “They’re just home videos,” refuting speculation about any Kryptonian technology involvement.
On character choices, Gunn explained that he never considered adapting Michael’s character into established figures like Jack Ryder or G. Gordon Godfrey, saying such a decision would have altered the story. He emphasized that the character Thornwaite was written first and later cast, adding that Cleavis, unlike Godfrey, is not a New God but an ordinary person who stirs anti-metahuman sentiment.
Regarding fan speculation about The Batman Part II, Gunn was unequivocal. “Guys please stop believing this nonsense. I think six of us have read the script. No one knows anything about the Batman 2,” he stated. He similarly dismissed rumors involving characters like Robin and Hush, adding that only a handful of people know the film’s actual story concept.
Meanwhile, Superman remains a major box office performer. The film has surpassed Deadpool 2 and Suicide Squad in domestic earnings, reaching $325.6 million and becoming the eighth highest-grossing DC title in U.S. history. Projections suggest it will soon overtake Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’s $330.4 million to become the highest-grossing Superman film domestically.
Now in its fifth weekend, Superman is expected to earn between $7 million and $9 million, with global revenue at $565.5 million. The film is projected to cross the $600 million mark within days, potentially finishing with $640 million to $680 million worldwide. Warner Bros. has confirmed the film will be available for premium video-on-demand purchase on August 26, 2025, across Apple TV, Amazon, and Fandango at Home.
Starring David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Gunn’s film opens a new chapter in the DC Universe. The story follows Superman’s struggle to rebuild his public image after a geopolitical crisis engineered by Lex Luthor, setting the tone for the franchise’s cinematic future.
