James Gunn has shed new light on Man of Tomorrow, his upcoming Superman film, and the continuation of the DC Universe storyline. Speaking on The Howard Stern Show, Gunn confirmed that filming will begin in April 2026 and revealed a surprising dynamic between two of the DCU’s most iconic characters.
“It’s a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat,” Gunn explained. While details about the antagonist remain under wraps, the comment has already fueled speculation about which larger-than-life villain could push Superman and Lex into such an uneasy alliance.
The film, slated for release on July 9, 2027, will see the return of David Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Gunn has described Man of Tomorrow not as a traditional sequel to 2025’s Superman, but as a continuation of Clark Kent’s journey, with each film in the series exploring different aspects of the character.
Earlier this year, Gunn also confirmed during a Q&A session that Peacemaker Season 2 would connect closely with Man of Tomorrow. He described the upcoming television season and film as “very very connected,” highlighting how the DCU’s interconnected storytelling will unfold across both television and cinema. Gunn noted that while each project can stand on its own, character arcs will evolve in ways that reflect what he called the “Butterfly Effect,” where small changes create significant shifts in who the characters become.
Lois Lane, Gunn mentioned, will have a significant role in the story, highlighting her continued importance in Clark Kent’s personal and heroic journey.
With Gunn’s creative vision emphasizing both character-driven drama and large-scale superhero spectacle, Man of Tomorrow appears poised to expand the foundations of the DCU while testing the boundaries of Superman’s greatest rivalries and alliances. The revelation that Superman and Lex Luthor may fight side by side promises a fresh, unexpected angle on a relationship that has defined decades of DC storytelling.
