James Gunn has officially confirmed that a sequel to Superman (2025) is in development, titled Superman: Man of Tomorrow. Scheduled for release in 2027, the announcement was accompanied by concept art featuring Superman and Lex Luthor, hinting at the central conflict of the upcoming film.
Although Gunn has not shared specific story details, the title Man of Tomorrow carries a strong legacy within Superman’s comic book history. The phrase has been used in several major storylines, including Alan Moore’s celebrated Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? from 1986, which gave readers a poignant send-off to the Silver Age Superman. The title also appeared in the 1990s with Superman: The Man of Tomorrow, a companion series that filled out DC’s weekly Superman publishing schedule, and more recently with the 2020 digital-first series Superman: Man of Tomorrow. Each of these interpretations emphasized themes of legacy, identity, and the future of the iconic hero.
The upcoming sequel will once again star David Corenswet as Clark Kent, alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The supporting cast includes Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho. Returning characters such as Jimmy Olsen, Perry White, and the Kent family will also play roles in the story.
David Corenswet and Nicholas Hault shared two new pieces of concept art featuring both Lex Luthor and Superman.
The confirmation follows the strong performance of Superman (2025), which has grossed approximately 612 million dollars worldwide since its July release. With 351.8 million from domestic markets and 259.8 million internationally, it stands as the seventh-highest-grossing film of the year. Given the film’s commercial success and positive reception, Warner Bros. appears confident in expanding this iteration of the DC Universe under Gunn’s direction.
