DC Studios co-head James Gunn has shared new insights into his approach to shaping the future of Batman within the larger DC cinematic universe. Speaking during a recent interview, Gunn addressed both the challenges of fan expectations and his own lifelong connection to the character.
According to Gunn, DC’s leadership has been working from a broad framework designed at the beginning of his tenure, one that spans across multiple films and shows. “When we first took over, I had written up what the first shows were supposed to be and then where the story eventually went,” Gunn explained, noting that the plan was first pitched to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav before being expanded with input from a trusted team of writers. While Gunn acknowledged that certain elements have shifted over time, the overarching direction remains intact, beginning with Superman and extending into future projects.
When asked about the possibility of seeing a blue and gray Batman suit on screen, Gunn admitted that the subject generates heated debate among fans. “There is a religious aspect to so much of this stuff that’s very uncomfortable,” he said, pointing out how disagreements often arise over details such as white eyes, the yellow crest, or the color of the utility belt. Gunn stressed that while costume details matter to some, his focus is on crafting strong stories and delivering compelling character portrayals.
The conversation also touched on the many versions of Batman that have appeared across media. Gunn described his appreciation for the different tones the character has taken over the years, from the lighter Silver Age comics and Adam West’s campy television portrayal to the darker, grittier iterations found in Neil Adams’ comics of the 1970s. “That was my experience with Batman too as a kid,” Gunn reflected, recalling how those darker comics resonated with him and made him feel more grown up.
For Gunn, Batman has always held a personal significance. He revealed that much of his childhood was spent drawing comics, often featuring Batman alongside his own original characters. “It was my life,” he admitted. This deep-rooted connection, he suggested, is part of what makes leading DC Studios feel almost like destiny.
Although Gunn did not provide specific details about the upcoming cinematic version of Batman, he emphasized the importance of balancing fan expectations with creative storytelling. He believes that Batman’s enduring appeal stems from the character’s versatility, allowing each generation to connect with a version that resonates meaningfully with them.
