James Gunn has given fans a fresh update on Man of Tomorrow, the highly anticipated sequel to 2025’s Superman. In a post shared on Twitter/X, the filmmaker revealed an image of the script’s cover page with the caption, “😈🤝😇 #MoT 7.9.27.” The shorthand nods both to the film’s working title and its official release date of July 9, 2027.
While details remain scarce, Gunn has gradually offered glimpses into the story and creative direction. Speaking previously on The Howard Stern Show, he confirmed that the film will explore an unexpected dynamic between Superman and his archrival Lex Luthor. “It’s a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat,” Gunn said. Although the identity of this larger villain remains undisclosed, the notion of an alliance between hero and nemesis has already sparked considerable speculation among fans.
David Corenswet will reprise his role as Clark Kent, while Nicholas Hoult returns as Lex Luthor, solidifying their central roles in shaping the narrative. Gunn has described Man of Tomorrow not as a straightforward sequel, but as a continuation of Superman’s evolving journey. Each installment, he explained, is meant to highlight different facets of the character rather than retread familiar ground.
Production is expected to begin in April 2026, with rewrites and pre-production taking place throughout the coming year. Gunn also emphasized how the interconnected nature of the DC Universe will influence the film. During a recent Q&A, he confirmed that Peacemaker Season 2 will directly connect with Man of Tomorrow, stressing that television provides greater freedom to expand character development. “I like building characters more than anything else in writing and TV is a chance to really do that,” Gunn explained, noting the overlap between his television and film storytelling.
Man of Tomorrow is set to be the fourth film in the DC Universe’s new continuity and the seventh entry in Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Developed by DC Studios under Gunn and Peter Safran’s leadership, the project is positioned as a key installment in establishing the franchise’s tone and direction.
The film will premiere in U.S. theaters on July 9, 2027. Until then, fans will likely be parsing every new detail Gunn reveals, from casting news to story hints, as Superman takes his next step on the big screen.
