John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando Comparison Reveals Differences Across PC, PS5, and Xbox

by Salal Awan

A new technical comparison for John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando has highlighted several visual and performance differences between the PC and console versions of the game, including some curious quirks depending on the platform being used.

On PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PlayStation 5 Pro, players can choose between two display modes. The quality mode offers noticeable improvements to shadows, textures, level of detail, and overall post-processing compared to performance mode. Despite the graphical changes, frame rates in both modes remain largely stable, with only occasional drops during moments of particularly heavy visual load.

The PlayStation 5 Pro stands out in the comparison by delivering a higher average resolution than the other console versions. Meanwhile, Xbox Series S uses a configuration that closely resembles the performance mode seen on the more powerful consoles, but with a significant limitation. Its frame rate is locked to 30fps and the system does not offer multiple display modes.

On PC, the game runs with higher settings overall compared to the console versions. However, the comparison notes that there are occasional instances where shadows are not projected properly. When running on high-end hardware such as Nvidia’s RTX 50 series GPUs with DLSS 4 enabled, the game is capable of exceeding 150fps while outputting at 2160p with maximum settings.

John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando launches globally today, March 12, 2026. Developed by Saber Interactive using the Swarm Engine, the same technology behind Space Marine 2, the game is a cooperative first-person shooter inspired by 1980s action films. Players team up in squads of up to four to battle massive hordes created by the Sludge God.

The title is available on PlayStation 5 with PS5 Pro enhancements, Xbox Series X and Series S, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store.
