Ken Levine Shares Thoughts on BioShock 4, Explains Why He Is Not Involved

Ken Levine, the creator of the BioShock franchise, has addressed his thoughts on the upcoming BioShock 4 and clarified why he has no involvement in the project. Speaking in a recent interview, Levine explained that while he still has deep respect for the series and those working on it, he does not feel the need to return to the world he helped establish.

According to Levine, the challenge of continuing to create within the BioShock universe was most difficult during the development of BioShock 2. At that time, he had different creative ambitions and felt as though he was competing against himself. With BioShock 4, however, Levine made a conscious decision to step away and allow others to take the reins. He emphasized that his departure was not due to disagreements with the team, but rather a personal realization that he had already said what he needed to through the franchise.

Instead, Levine has placed his energy into Judas, his current project at Ghost Story Games. He described the creative freedom of directing Judas as one of the main reasons he no longer seeks involvement in BioShock. Unlike contributing marginally to a sequel, Levine enjoys having complete responsibility for the creative direction of his own work. As he noted, this ensures that any praise or criticism can be fairly directed at him alone.

Levine also reflected on his past experiences managing multiple projects at Irrational Games, which included Tribes: Vengeance, SWAT 4, and Freedom Force vs. The Third Reich. He admitted that spreading himself across so many titles left him unable to fully commit to any single one, an approach he no longer wants to repeat. Instead, his focus remains firmly on Judas, with the aim of giving it the best possible chance to succeed.

While Levine is not involved in BioShock 4, he expressed confidence in the talent behind the project. He acknowledged Rod Fergusson, who now oversees the franchise, as a smart and capable leader who played an important role in helping complete BioShock Infinite. Levine ultimately views the continuation of BioShock as a positive step and hopes the next entry will deliver something special to fans.
