Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 director Daniel Vavra has responded to the negative reviews and other criticism received by the game.
The Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 director took to Twitter/X to express his dissatisfaction with review aggregator Metacritic as well as negative reviews from various outlets. He also took on people who criticized him over his depiction of the game’s protagonist.
Vavra called out both GamesHub and Eurogamer over their low-scoring reviews for Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, both of which are aggregated on Metacritic. He sarcastically referred to them as “trusted sources”, implying that they were on an agenda to drop the Metacritic aggregate below 90, the minimum score required for the website’s “universal acclaim” label. He blamed “journalistic standards” for the game no longer having an aggregate of 90 or above on Metacritic, suggesting that media outlets are “bribed”. Ultimately, he took satisfaction from player reviews on Steam, which currently have an average of 92%.
The Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 director compared Metacritic to rival Opencritic, saying that the latter is a much better review aggregator. He pointed out that it features more reviews, more options, and more information. He expressed his disappointment over the acquisition of Gamerankings by Metacritic. He also criticized modern websites for their removal of user options in the name of accessibility.
Furthermore, Vavra responded to people who criticized him over the sexual preference of Kingdom Come Deliverance 2’s protagonist, Henry. One individual called him a grifter, who just wanted to gain money via the first game and then betrayed fans with the second game. Another Twitter/X user criticized him for making Henry, a canonically straight character, gay, which, according to them, no one had asked for. Vavra was also blamed for “lying” to the community about these elements, which he denied. He was also told by multiple people that they’d much rather pirate the game, as the PC version isn’t protected by Denuvo.
