Square Enix has confirmed that the Kingdom Hearts franchise has hit a new sales high, with total global sales now over 38 million units. This updated number shows an increase of one million copies over the last year, proving how strong the series remains more than two decades after its debut. The franchise keeps drawing in new players with its mix of action role-playing, crossover stories, and constant re-releases across many platforms.
The series first launched in 2002 and quickly got attention for being a unique collaboration between Square Enix and the massive cast of Disney and Pixar characters. Throughout the main games and numerous spin-offs, players follow Sora, along with Donald Duck and Goofy, as they travel through a wide variety of Disney-themed worlds and fight enemies like the Heartless. Over time, the plot has evolved into one of the most complicated storylines in modern RPGs, tackling ideas of friendship, identity, and the battle between light and darkness.
Commercially, the franchise has consistently been a strong performer for Square Enix. Earlier in 2025, cumulative sales were over 37 million units, and this latest update confirms the total has now moved past 38 million. Kingdom Hearts III is still the fastest-selling installment, with 6.7 million units sold or shipped worldwide. The first two main games also continue to sell well, with the original Kingdom Hearts reaching about 6.3 million units and Kingdom Hearts II at around 5.2 million. Meanwhile, the HD collections and spin-off titles have significantly added to the series’ momentum, helping keep interest high across console generations.
Attention has now turned to Kingdom Hearts IV, which starts the new Lost Master arc. The upcoming game places Sora in Quadratum, a new location with a more realistic visual style inspired by metropolitan Tokyo. Built on Unreal Engine 5, the game aims to improve movement and combat by letting players use Keyblade abilities directly in exploring its larger environments. While Square Enix has not announced a release date, development is moving forward.
