Kazutaka Kodaka, the creative force behind The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, has revealed ambitious post-launch plans for the title, stating that story expansions and updates are expected to continue for years to come. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Kodaka confirmed that financial concerns that once threatened the studio’s survival have now eased, allowing the team to think well beyond launch content.
Now that bankruptcy is no longer a concern for Kadoka, he wants to expand The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy and add additional storylines to the game through patches and expansions for years to come.
The game, developed by Too Kyo Games in collaboration with Media.Vision and published by Aniplex, was released on April 24, 2025, for Nintendo Switch and PC. A hybrid of visual novel storytelling and tactical role-playing gameplay, The Hundred Line places players in the shoes of Takumi Sumino, a student who becomes a defender of the Last Defense Academy, a school caught in a ceaseless war with alien invaders. The narrative unfolds over 100 in-game days, with Takumi eventually gaining the ability to manipulate time to alter the course of events.
Kodaka, who co-directed the game alongside Zero Escape creator Kotaro Uchikoshi, says his vision is for the game to evolve like some of the industry’s most enduring titles. “I tried to aim this game to be like Cyberpunk 2077 or Grand Theft Auto Online,” Kodaka said. “I want it to be the open world of ‘scenario’ games.”
Kodaka even expressed a hope for The Hundred Line to remain relevant “for the next 10 years”—a tall order for any game, let alone one rooted in heavily scripted storytelling. “There are a lot of games out there,” he added. “We really had to create something crazy unique so that it stands out, competes with other games.”
The development of The Hundred Line was not without its struggles. Originally announced in 2018 as one of Too Kyo Games’ earliest projects, the title faced financial strain during its multi-year development cycle. At one point, the studio was forced to take out loans to continue production, and the writing staff was still being assembled as late as September 2023. Kodaka’s original concept included the idea of 100 possible narrative routes, which presented significant logistical challenges for a relatively small team.
With the game launched and gaining critical attention, Kodaka and his team seem to be in a stronger position, both creatively and financially. Although specific details about future expansions have not yet been revealed, the promise of ongoing support suggests that The Hundred Line could become a long-lasting title in the visual novel and strategy game genres. For fans of narrative-driven games, Kodaka’s vision of an “open world of scenario games” may represent the next significant evolution in the field.
