Netflix has confirmed that a sequel to its hit animated film KPop Demon Hunters is officially in development. Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will return to helm the follow-up, continuing the story of the supernatural K-pop group that became one of the streaming platform’s biggest successes.
The new film will also mark the first project under Netflix’s exclusive multiyear writing and directing partnership with Kang and Appelhans, focused on animation. According to the filmmakers, the sequel will continue expanding the universe introduced in the original movie while exploring the next chapter for its central characters.
Kang said she feels a strong sense of pride seeing audiences respond so positively to a story centered on Korean culture and characters. She noted that there is much more to explore in the world created for the film and described the upcoming sequel as only the beginning of what the team hopes to build.
Appelhans echoed that sentiment, explaining that the characters have become deeply personal to the creative team. He added that the filmmakers are eager to challenge the characters further and continue experimenting with the combination of music, animation, and storytelling that defined the first film.
Released on Netflix in June 2025, KPop Demon Hunters quickly became a major global hit. The animated feature has accumulated more than 500 million views on the platform, making it the most-watched film in Netflix history. The movie’s musical component also achieved significant success outside the streaming service. The fictional group HUNTR X became the first K-pop girl group to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, while the song Golden earned a Grammy Award.
The film has also received major recognition in the film industry, earning two Academy Award nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for Golden.
Netflix executives credited the film’s popularity to its ability to connect with audiences across cultures and generations. According to Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria, the project sparked a global fan community and demonstrated the potential of the creative partnership with the directors.
KPop Demon Hunters was produced in collaboration with Sony Pictures Animation. Leaders at the studio praised the filmmakers’ distinct vision and said they are excited to continue working with them as the story expands in the upcoming sequel.
The original film follows the K-pop trio HUNTR X, made up of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. While the group performs as global pop stars in public, they secretly act as demon hunters protecting their fans from supernatural threats. Their biggest challenge arrives in the form of a rival boy band known as the Saja Boys, who are revealed to be demons disguised as idols.
Netflix has not yet announced a release window for the sequel. In the meantime, the original KPop Demon Hunters remains available to stream on the platform.
