French Lara Croft voice actor Françoise Cadol is suing Aspyr Media for using AI to clone her voice lines in Tomb Raider 4 – 6 Remastered.
During an interview with Le Parisien (via Reset Era member Maxime), French Lara Croft voice actor Françoise Cadol revealed that she is pursuing legal action against Aspyr Media for using AI to simulate her voice in Tomb Raider 4 – 6 Remastered without her consent. She mentioned that hearing the AI-generated voice came as a shock. “It vaguely resembles mine, but it is not me,” she said, describing the imitation as “pure theft.”

Cadol has been associated with Lara Croft since 1996, when the first Tomb Raider game introduced the adventurous archaeologist to players worldwide. Her performance helped turn Croft into a cultural icon in France, and the role opened major opportunities in her career, including becoming the official French voice for Angelina Jolie, who portrayed the character in the 2001 and 2003 Tomb Raider films. Over the years, Cadol has also lent her voice to Sandra Bullock, Tilda Swinton, and Patricia Arquette, becoming one of France’s most recognizable dubbing artists.
However, on August 14, 2025, Aspyr Media released an update for its remastered compilation of Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, Tomb Raider Chronicles, and Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness. To Cadol’s surprise, the updated French audio no longer featured her original recordings. Instead, the remaster used a voice that closely resembled hers i.e. a voice she claims was generated by AI. “This vaguely resembles mine, but it is not me,” Cadol told Le Parisien, calling the decision “pure theft” carried out for “clear and deliberate commercial purposes.” She has issued a formal notice to the Texas-based publisher, demanding accountability for what she considers unauthorized use of her voice.
Cadol’s case highlights a growing tension in the entertainment industry over the use of AI to replicate performers’ work. The voice actor behind Aloy in Guerrilla Games’ Horizon series raised similar concerns over game performance as a art form after an ‘AI Aloy’ video surfaced. Read about it here.
