The next game from Larian Studios is likely to have a smaller scope than Baldur’s Gate 3, based on the latest information.
Speaking during an interview with Bloomberg, Larian Studios Chief Executive Officer, Swen Vincke, hinted that that he hopes to work on multiple games in future and expressed that he wants to make something smaller next. He stated that he doesn’t wish to spend another six years developing a single game.
Vincke also revealed that Baldur’s Gate 3 had sold over 2.5 million copies during its early access period, which allowed the project to stay financially viable despite the scope expanding and the development dragging on. He mentioned it was akin to making a movie, or several movies at the same time. He didn’t expect the studio would need a dedicated lighting, cinematics, Quality Assurance, or Audio team. Despite the challenges, Vincke remained satisfied and happy with his line of work.
Larian Studios’ latest role-playing game, Baldur’s Gate 3, is the third main entry in the Baldur’s Gate series, which is based on the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop role-playing system. Initially, an early access version of the game was launched on October 6, 2020 for macOS, Windows, and Stadia. On August 3, 2023, the full version was released for Window, while the game is set to arrive on PS5 and MacOS on September 6, 2023. The Stadia version faced cancellation due to the streaming service’s subsequent closure.
Baldur’s Gate 3 features both single-player and cooperative multiplayer elements. Players can create characters and form parties. Additionally, they can team up online with others for multiplayer adventures. The game features turn-based combat, following D&D 5th Edition rules, similar to Larian’s previous titles Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin II. The game’s story is set 120 years after Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn and months after Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus. Darkness looms as mind flayers invade Faerun.
