League of Legends Login Outage Hits Players, Riot Explains Disruption

by Ali Haider

League of Legends experienced a widespread service disruption earlier today, leaving many players unable to log into the game and access core features. The outage affected login functionality and active games across multiple regions, prompting Riot Games to temporarily disable ranked queues while engineers worked to resolve the issue.

Riot Games acknowledged the situation publicly through its official social media channels. In a statement shared during the outage, the developer said, “We’re aware of an issue that’s impacting games and preventing some players from logging in. Ranked queues are temporarily disabled while we work on a fix. Thanks for your patience.” The message confirmed that the problem extended beyond isolated cases and required immediate intervention.

As the situation progressed, Riot provided several incremental updates. By 2:27 AM CET, the company stated that logging in through the League of Legends client itself was once again possible, suggesting that the primary login failure had been addressed. However, Riot cautioned that downloading the game or updates was still unavailable at that time, noting, “That’s expected, unfortunately. We’re still working on making updates to installers.”

Players encountering lingering issues were advised to relaunch their clients and ensure their system date was set correctly. Riot also confirmed that an earlier workaround involving manually setting the system date was no longer required and should not be used. Additional clarification followed shortly afterward from Riot employee RiotFlixxy, who stated at 2:29 AM CET, “We think we now have the required fixes live in both Riot Client and League Client. Would love to see confirmations from y’all though. We’re eagerly watching our dashboards.”

Earlier updates from RiotFlixxy indicated that while the League Client had received an update, the Riot Client fix was still in progress, contributing to inconsistent behavior for some users. At 1:50 AM CET, Riot confirmed that internal testing of the fix was progressing well but that no estimated resolution time could be shared at that stage.

While Riot Games has not formally detailed the root cause, multiple community reports suggested the outage may have been linked to an expired security certificate within the League client. Content creator Vandiril reported that login failures occurred because the client certificate expired on the same day as the outage. Riot has not publicly confirmed this explanation, though the timeline aligns with the observed symptoms.

League of Legends remains one of Riot Games’ flagship titles, and disruptions of this scale are relatively rare. Services now appear to be stabilizing, though Riot continues to monitor the situation. Players experiencing ongoing issues are encouraged to restart the Riot Client and verify that their installations are fully updated as fixes continue to roll out.
