MachineGames on the Future of Wolfenstein: “We Have a Story to Tell”

by Ali Haider

The future of the Wolfenstein franchise remains a subject of great interest for fans, and MachineGames has now addressed it directly. Speaking in a recent NoClip documentary, key developers from the studio revealed that the series was always envisioned as a trilogy, and they still have more of B.J. Blazkowicz’s story left to tell.

Axel Torvenius, reflecting on the team’s long history with the series, emphasized how experience and trust have allowed them to take creative risks. “We can do anything. It’s a video game, right? We can do anything. It’s just a matter of execution, and making it believable, and obviously, in the end, fun,” he explained. The confidence within the studio comes from years of collaboration on the franchise and a belief in their ability to deliver bold, challenging projects.

Studio Head Jerk Gustafsson further expanded on the long-term narrative planning, noting that the team has always viewed B.J.’s arc as spanning three main entries. “We have always seen this as a trilogy. That journey, for B.J., even during those first weeks at id when we mapped out New Order, we still had the plan for, at least, that character. What will happen in the second one? What will happen in the third one? I think that’s important to say, because – at least, I hope – that we’re not done with Wolfenstein yet. We have a story to tell.”

The comments reaffirm that Wolfenstein: The New Order and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus were only parts of a larger vision for Blazkowicz’s struggle against the Nazi regime. The first game centered on his personal awakening and fight, while the sequel expanded the focus to include the broader resistance and his newfound family. If MachineGames follows through on its trilogy plans, the next step may bring that personal and political journey to a definitive close.

The Wolfenstein franchise has a long history dating back to its stealth-based origins in the early 1980s, later redefining the first-person shooter genre with id Software’s Wolfenstein 3D. Since ZeniMax Media acquired id Software, MachineGames has been the primary developer of the series. While the studio has just completed the DLC for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, fans of Wolfenstein can rest assured that the developers are not yet finished with one of gaming’s most iconic sagas.
